What are two Cabinet-level positions?
By EasySay. Published . Updated .
Name any two Cabinet-level positions, for example Attorney General and Secretary of State.
These are leaders of large executive departments who advise the President, and each list accepts many other positions too. This is question 48 on the 2025 USCIS civics list and question 36 on the 2008 list. It is unofficial practice.

We matched the two lists ourselves: USCIS publishes no mapping between the 2008 and 2025 questions.
These are the answers USCIS prints. The 2025 list says there may be other correct answers, and encourages you to answer with the ones it prints.
What does the answer mean?
This question asks for two jobs, so you need two different positions. Most Cabinet-level jobs lead one of the big executive departments, and the titles usually start with Secretary of. A few leaders of other agencies count as well, and so does the Vice President.
The lists are generous. The 2025 list accepts 22 answers and the 2008 list accepts 16, and you only need two. Pick the two you can say most easily and practice them together as a pair.
Why does USCIS ask it?
An earlier question asks what the Cabinet does. This one asks who is in it, so that you know a little about the people who help the President run the executive branch.
USAGov describes the Cabinet as the vice president, the heads of the executive departments and other high-ranking officials. The President nominates them all, and the Senate approves them.
How the officer asks it
The officer asks for two Cabinet-level positions, and you answer with two titles said in full, such as Secretary of Labor and Attorney General. No names are needed. Learn three or four titles in advance, so that you still have a second choice if one of them slips your mind.
What are the common wrong answers?
These jobs are powerful, but they belong to Congress or the courts, so they are not in the Cabinet.
- Speaker of the House. That person leads the House of Representatives.
- Chief Justice. That person leads the Supreme Court.
- Senate Majority Leader. That person leads the larger party in the Senate.
How can I remember it?
Say the pair out loud as one phrase, such as State and Labor. Two short titles that you have said together are easier to find than two that you have only read.
Which questions are related?
- What does the President’s Cabinet do?The Cabinet is the group of senior advisers to the President, mostly the leaders of the executive departments.
- Who is Commander in Chief of the U.S. military? The President leads the armed forces as Commander in Chief, which keeps the military under an elected civilian.
- Who signs bills to become laws? The President signs a bill that Congress has approved, which makes it a law, or refuses it with a veto.
- What does the judicial branch do?The courts: explaining laws, reviewing them, settling disputes and checking them against the Constitution.
Questions people ask
Why does the 2025 list say Secretary of War (Defense)?
The 2025 list prints that title among its accepted answers, where the 2008 list prints Secretary of Defense. Learn the version for the list you are using, and check the USCIS test updates page for changes.
Is the Vice President a Cabinet-level position?
Yes. Both lists accept the Vice President as one of the answers, and USAGov counts the vice president as a member of the Cabinet.
Is this question on both the 2008 and 2025 lists?
Yes. It is question 48 on the 2025 list and question 36 on the 2008 list. Both lists accept many positions, and their wording differs a little.
